We talk a lot about sustainable living when it comes to the foods we eat and the clothes we wear, but have you ever thought about that it spands so much further than what most of us think and speak about every single day?

Basically, we could apply sustainability to everything in this world and today I want you to take a moment to think about one of the biggest issues we’re facing and that is landfill.

A huge contributor to landfill is furniture – did you ever think about that? Furniture waste is a growing problem and like the rest of the issues we’re facing in this world, it’s here to stay unless we choose to do something proactive about it.

We’ve become a throw-away society with so much cheap furniture available that isn’t built to last, and over 85% of furniture we put on the curb isn’t recycled and is instead simply sent to landfill.

Based on a compositional survey of more than 2,500 households in metropolitan areas, on average each household disposes around 24kg of wooden furniture per year. Approximately a third of this are soft furnishings like sofas and armchairs, and two-thirds other wooden furniture.

“If you think of a population of 2 million households in the Greater Sydney Region, this could add up to 48,000 tonnes of used furniture per year disposed at the kerbside,” Kevin Morgan, Managing Director of EC Sustainable says.

To put that into furniture terms – and figuring in average furniture weights – that’s the equivalent of 800,000 three-seater sofas, 1.65 million dining tables, 3.4 million coffee tables or 6.85 million chairs, thrown away every year.

These numbers are for Sydney only and don’t include other furniture delivered directly to tips by households and businesses or illegal dumping. And the problem is getting worse.

Writing this actually sends chills down my spine. When I started doing research for this article, I got deeper and deeper into this wormhole – a very uncomfortable one, might I add.

Nonetheless, these problems won’t go away simply because we turn a blind eye to what is happening, not only in Australia, but all over the world and no one can fix the problem unless we all collectively add to the solution that is, thinking twice about purchasing new furniture, the lifespan we can utilise it for and, if we need to get rid of it, can we upcycle it in the sense of handing it down to someone who’s in need of furniture and can’t afford to buy new ones themselves?

I want to introduce you to a man whom I met a few months ago. A man who’s very different from anyone else in the furniture business I’ve ever come across. Very down to earth and very passionate about building a lifestyle and home that’ll last you for tens of years to come.

Justin – owner of Crafted Furniture in Rushcutters Bay (Sydney) – can be a key-player en helping solve the issues of fast furniture as he is replacing the term with SLOW FURNITURE.

What is Crafted Furniture’s philosophy behind Slow Furniture? Well, there’s a lot of sides to this, but below I’ll name a few:

  1. Handmade in Sydney: which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and oil pollution drastically and turn-over time is much quicker
  2. Sustainable Wood Source: all wood is ethically sourced from environmentally sustainable forests.
  3. Local Made Foams: foams made here in Sydney by Dunlop foams
  4. Sustainable & Natural Fabrics: Crafted Furniture lean towards fabric of natural fibre content and suggest these where possible – Crafted fully understand where the fabrics come from and their sustainability.
  5. Recyclable Schemes: Crafted Furniture takes pride in recycling your old sofa or furniture to people in need. They will gladly take your sofa and get it re-upholstered and cleaned to be passed onto a new home where it’s highly needed.
  6. Creating local jobs: by doing all of the above, Crafted Furniture also helps to create jobs for more people onshore and keeps the economy in Australia for Australians.

If you’re into health, and in particular your own gut-health, chances that you’ve heard about Inflammation and why it’s important to eat an anti-inflammatory diet would be big.

So, what is inflammation all about?

Your immune system becomes activated when your body recognises anything that is foreign – such as bacterias (good or bad). This often triggers a process called inflammation. Intermittent bouts of inflammation directed at truly threatening invaders protect your health – that’s what we have our immune system for.

However, sometimes inflammation persists, day in and day out, even when you are not threatened by a foreign invader. That’s when inflammation becomes your enemy. Many major diseases that that is rising worldwide – including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’s – have been linked to chronic inflammation, according to studies conducted by leading researchers.

To paint the picture clearer; imagine if you kept training an exact same injured muscle every single day without getting enough rest time to let your body repair between workouts. The inflammation would never go down, because you’d constantly be re-injuring yourself.

That’s exactly what happens if you keep irritating your gut lining (for example, with foods you’re sensitive to or that isn’t healthy for our bodies). The injury is constantly being repeated, three meals a day (or more) 365 days a year.

Acute inflammation isn’t a problem if the inflammatory response flares up and then dies down. But chronic inflammation can actually be a symptom that causes problems of its own.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell the cause from the effect: most chronic diseases come along with inflammation, but is it the inflammation that causes the disease, or the disease that causes the inflammation? But for at least a few, there’s some evidence that inflammation is actually the cause.

What are the causes of inflammation?

Lots of factors are in play when it comes to inflammation in the body and they can cross-trigger each other, too, however below are a few of well-known causes that trigger inflammation in the body and chronic inflammation if the causes persist day in and day out:

  • Physical Stress
  • Psychological & Emotional Stress
  • Pathogens (fungi or bacteria)
  • Diets high in saturated fats, sugars, refined carbohydrates & processed foods.
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking

What are the symptoms of inflammation?

  • Tiredness
  • Fatigue/Chronic Fatigue
  • Psoriasis/Dermatitis/Eczema
  • Acne
  • Digestive Issues
  • Bloating/Pain
  • Swelling & Pain in Joints
  • Depression
  • Heartburn/Reflux
  • Persistent Headaches/Migraines
  • Brain Fog

The list can continue. Studies are becoming more and more plentiful and confirms that inflammation in the body really does lead to many of the chronic diseases we deal with in todays day & age.

How can we get rid of inflammation?

The good news is that inflammation in the body is reversible, and it’s possible to do so without medication. The best shield for inflammation in the body that we have available to us, is right in front of our noses, and it’s our everyday diet choices that we make for ourselves and our bodies.

Particular fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, apples, and leafy greens that are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols – protective compounds found in plants – have a proven effect on minimising inflammation in the body.

Studies have also associated nuts with reduced markers of inflammation. Even coffee, which contains polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds, may protect against inflammation, as well.

To reduce levels of inflammation, you want to aim for an overall healthy diet. In addition to lowering inflammation, a more natural, less processed diet can have noticeable effects on your physical and emotional health, like improving mood and overall quality of life.

What are some anti-inflammatory foods I can incorporate into my diet?

There are many, but just remember that you want to remove many of the inflammatory foods from your diet that continues to cause havoc whilst you increase these anti-inflammatory foods. If you can eat organic I highly recommend this, as chemicals can cause inflammation in the body just as easily as a poor diet. If you cannot afford buying organic, try buying local produce at your locals farmers market or fruit & veg supplier. Always remember to wash your produce properly before consuming it.

  • Green Leafy Vegetables (Spinach, Watercress, Kale, Lettuce, Collard)
  • Other Vegetables (Tomatoes, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Radishes)
  • Colourful Fruits (Strawberries, Blueberries, Lemons, Oranges, Raspberries, Grapefruit)
  • Nuts (Pecans, Walnuts, Almonds, Hazelnuts)
  • Spices (Ginger, Turmeric, Curry, Basil, Cinnamon, Rosemary, Thyme)
  • Fatty Fish (Tuna, Salmon, Mackerel, Cod)
  • Healthy Oils (Olive, Coconut, Avocado, Flaxseed)
  • Tea (White & Green Tea, Turmeric, Ginger, Licorice)
  • Mushrooms (Shiitake, Oyster, Wild)
  • Filtered Water
  • Raw Chocolate
  • If drinking; Red Wine (in moderation)

A lot of the time, the power lies with us to reverse chronic diseases and create a better and healthier life for ourselves.

The only questions is; will you take it or not?

This could either go one way or the other; either you think I’m talking about your usual cup mushrooms you pick up at your local supermarket to throw in with your stir-fry or you might be a bit more open-minded and think about mushrooms that makes your ‘head spin a little’ ;).

The mushrooms I’m talking about, are those of the safe kind & well-studied – also known as Medicinal Mushrooms.

These mushrooms are a special group of mushrooms which have incredible healing qualities. Out of an estimated 5.1 million species of mushroom, 270 species are classified as having medicinal qualities.

Medicinal mushrooms aren’t just another superfood fad, their use extend way back to the Han Dynasty in China. From the performance-enhancing cordyceps to immunity-boosting chaga, each medicinal mushroom brings a unique combination of healing compounds unlike anything else found on earth that can have an incredible beneficial impact on your health.

Personally, I’ve gone in and out with trialling mushrooms over the last few years. I especially incorporate many more when I’m in LA, simply because I feel that quality-mushrooms are easier to buy, as opposed to in Australia, however, that said, a few brands in Australia are really starting to add to the market. I’ll outline those later, so that you can check them out if you’re interested in incorporating ‘shrooms’ into your everyday health-diet.

While much attention in recent years has focused on various immunological and anti-cancer properties of certain mushrooms, they also offer other potentially important health benefits, including antioxidants, anti-hypertensive and cholesterol-lowering properties, liver protection, as well as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-viral and anti-microbial properties.

If you’ve been using adaptogens, you can sort of compare mushrooms to this.

So, to make this as underwhelming as possible, as I know a new area quickly can take overhand, below is a brief description of the most popular medicinal mushrooms & their benefits:

Lion’s Mane:

Feeling a little foggy or slow? Lion’s mane is most often studied for its benefits on cognitive functions, with new studies pointing to its powerful abilities when used by people who have Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. But it’s also great for gut health! Consuming Lion’s mane regularly can help support digestive health and the circulatory system.

Lion’s Mane can help with:

  • Mental Clarity
  • Brain Fog
  • Concentration
  • Promotes Digestion
  • Protects GI-tract against environmental toxins

Shiitake:

These mushrooms are particularly good for the heart. Shiitakes contain compounds that inhibit the absorption and production of cholesterol in the liver. These nifty shrooms also contain phytonutrients, which aid in preventing plaque buildup and, as shown in a rat study, maintain healthy blood pressure and circulation.

Shiitake can help with;

  • Boosting Immune System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Lowering Cholesterol
  • Heart Health
  • Blood Pressure & Circulation
  • Liver Function
  • Antioxidant Defences

Reishi:

In Ancient Chinese medicine Reishi is referred to as the “spirit herb”, known for its ability to improve mind, body and spirit. Reishi is also known as the mushroom of long life. The Reishi mushroom contains several bioactive compounds. These compounds include specific polysaccharides, with triterpene being one of the active polysaccharide compounds of Reishi mushroom. It possesses potent anti-inflammatory, anti-tumorigenic and hypolipidemic properties. Triterpenes from Reishi are associated with cancer cell death as well. Reishi is also associated with toning the blood, reducing phlegm, eradicating coughing and wheezing, strengthening the visceral organs, and promoting restful sleep.

Reishi can help with:

  • Boost Digestion
  • Boost Immune Function
  • Calming, Restful Sleep
  • Reduce Anxiety, Depression & Paranoia
  • Increase Oxygenation of Cells

Chaga:

Chaga has been used by traditional cultures for its health benefits, for hundreds of years.

This mushroom presents as a hardened, blackened, crusty formation, with the appearance of a bursting tumor on the trunk of a birch tree. Chaga’s most important components, betulinic acid and melano-glucan complexes are derived from the bark of the birch trees the fungus grows on. Chaga is traditionally used as a tea and has been shown to prevent and treat cancer, support the immune system, is anti-viral and reduces inflammation. For those of you that want to fight disease and continue to look and feel young (yes please!) this mushroom is for you

Chaga can help with:

  • Mental Health
  • Boosting Energy
  • Detoxification
  • Regulating Blood Sugar
  • Strengthening the Heart
  • Boost Digestion
  • Works as a probiotic
  • Immunity

Cordyceps:

Cordyceps fight free radicals (compounds that cause damage to cells and DNA in the body), infection and inflammation. They also help with fighting stress and fatigue. They’re great for those of us with a busy lifestyle – if you workout regularly or are always on the go and maybe feeling a little worn out, cordyceps is for you.

The main health benefit from cordyceps is increased energy because they help to deliver oxygen to the body at a cellular level. Due to their ability to increase metabolic efficiency, many athletes utilise cordyceps for increased efficiency of energy metabolism.

Cordyceps can help with:

  • Boosting Energy
  • Low Libido
  • Anti-Fatigue
  • Kidney Function Improvement
  • Adrenal Health
  • Immune Defence
  • Increased Oxygen to Cells

Turkey Tail:

Turkey tail mushroom is best known to stimulate immune function and reduce inflammation. It has a long history of use in Asia among practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, who used formulations of turkey tail to promote general health, strength and longevity.

It’s been used as early as the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty in China. The Japanese, who reference it as kawaritake or “cloud mushrooms” due to an image of swirling clouds, have been well aware of the benefits of this super, power-filled mushroom, with researchers noting its health benefits, particularly in boosting the immune system. In fact, the cloud-like image symbolises “longevity and health, spiritual attunement and infinity” to these Asian cultures.

Turkey tail is high in the protein-bound polysaccharides PSK and PSP, which is thought to explain its ability to elevate both surface and core immunity against dangerous pathogens

Turkey Tail can help with:

  • Prevent & Treat Common Cold & Flu
  • May help combat cancer (consult with your Specialist)
  • Boosting Qi (chi)
  • Supports Bone Health
  • Improves Gut Health
  • Stress Management
  • Liver Function

It’s easy to incorporate these mushrooms into your diet. They normally come in powder or liquid form – don’t worry, you won’t be chewing on a mushroom as per say :)

I like to have mine throughout the day, usually in warm tonics like coffee or a hot cacao, because it’s another way to also help me to sit down and take a ‘breather’. You can even add them in smoothies, on your cereal, in your porridge, soups, stews or sprinkle on salads. The ideas are endless.

Below are some brands for you to check-out if you’re wanting to try medicinal mushrooms:

  • Lifecykel
  • Superfeast
  • Orchard Street
  • Shoku Iku
  • Four Sigmatic

Hope you’ll love incorporating medicinal mushrooms as much as I do

Hi friends,

I’m so sorry I haven’t been putting out much new content this week on the blog, but it’s been a crazy busy week for me, all good things though, but it’s meant that I haven’t had much time to actually sit down to write for all of you.

However, today, I’m dedicating to getting at least one article out, which will be this one on my favourite supplements that I’m currently lusting & loving for my body and, in particular, gut-health. It’s so requested, so I thought I’d actually give you all a collective overview of what I’m taking for my health, currently.

I love supplements, and I believe they’re a vital part of my health-regime in overcoming my gut-health issues. Although supplements can never outdo a bad diet, they are incredibly powerful if you incorporate them alongside a tailored, balanced & healthy diet that’s suitable for you and your internal gut-health.

Let’s get right into it..

Calcium D-Glucarate 500mg:

Calcium D-Glucarate is the calcium form of D-glucaric acid, a substance produced naturally in small amounts in the body. Glucaric acid is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Scientific studies have found that Calcium D-Glucarate can facilitate complete detoxification and elimination of certain metabolic waste products and environmental compounds from the body. By supporting the body’s natural cleansing mechanisms, Calcium D-Glucarate may help to maintain normal cellular function and promote liver, prostate, and breast health.

I take this because I have an enormous amount of excess oestrogen in my gut (shown through testing). Calcium D-Glucarate (3 x day) helps to metabolise this oestrogen and discard it from my body so that normal hormonal-levels can eventually be restored in my gut.

Digestive Enzymes:

All enzymes are catalysts that enable molecules to be changed from one form into another. The digestive enzymes definition is “enzymes that are used in the digestive system.” These enzymes help break down large macromolecules found in the foods we eat into smaller molecules that our guts are capable of absorbing, therefore supporting gut health and making sure the nutrients are delivered to the body.

Digestive enzymes are split into three classes: proteolytic enzymes that are needed to digest protein, lipases needed to digest fat and amylases needed to digest carbohydrates.

How do digestive enzymes work? Digestion is a complex process that first begins when you chew food, which releases enzymes in your saliva. Most of the work happens thanks to gastrointestinal fluids that contain digestive enzymes, which act on certain nutrients (fats, carbs or proteins). We make specific digestive enzymes to help with absorption of different types of foods we eat. In other words, we make carbohydrate-specific, protein-specific and fat-specific enzymes.

Digestive enzymes aren’t just beneficial — they’re essential. They turn complex foods into smaller compounds, including amino acids, fatty acids, cholesterol & simple sugars. Enzymes are synthesised and secreted in different parts of your digestive tract, including your mouth, stomach and pancreas.

I take enzymes 3 x daily. Morning, lunch & dinner after each meal.

Probiotics:

Probiotics are bacteria that line your digestive tract and support your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and fight infection. Your body contains about the same number of gut bacteria molecules as it does cells for the rest of your body, so it’s no wonder your gut is so important to your health.

Your skin and digestive system alone host about 2,000 different types of bacteria. Probiotics benefits have been proven effective in supporting immune function, reducing inflammation, promoting healthy digestion, as well as maintaining beautiful skin, especially when combined with prebiotics.

Your good gut bacteria is also responsible for:

  • Producing vitamin B12, butyrate and vitamin K2
  • Crowding out bad microbes
  • Creating enzymes that destroy harmful bacteria
  • Supporting immune function

Probiotics are in our systems from the moments we are born. When a newborn is in the birth canal of the mother during delivery, the baby is exposed to the bacteria of his or her mother for the first time. This event starts a chain of events inside the baby’s gastrointestinal tract, and the infant’s GI tract starts to produce good bacteria.

Nearly everyone can benefit from probiotic supplements, but they can be especially beneficial for those who aren’t getting at least a few servings of fermented foods in their diet. Additionally, those with an autoimmune disease, digestive issues or other health problems may also want to consider investing in a high-quality probiotic supplement.

Probiotic dosage is measured in “colony forming units,” or CFUs. Guidance lines says to aim for at least 5–10 billion CFUs per day for children and 10–20 billion CFUs each day for adults. However, the recommended dosage may vary based on individual health concerns, so discuss with your health professional for personalised guidance as needed.

I take a good quality probiotic supplement every night before bed.

Zinc:

Zinc, which is actually a type of metal, is an essential trace element. Zinc is needed in small amounts every day in order to maintain health and perform important functions each day. Zinc benefits the body in many ways: helps with hormone production, growth and repairmen; improves immunity and facilitates digestion.

Zinc benefits also include its ability to act as an anti-inflammatory agent, therefore zinc may have significant therapeutic benefits for several common, chronic diseases.

Zinc is actually present within all bodily tissue and needed for healthy cell division. It acts like an antioxidant within the body, fighting free-radical damage and slow the ageing process. Zinc also has a big impact on hormonal balance, so for this reason, even a small zinc deficiency can result in hormonal complications, especially for women.

Without enough zinc present in your diet, it’s possible to experience negative reactions like frequently getting sick, feeling like you’re always tired and run down, poor concentration, stunted growth, and the inability to heal wounds.

You can find zinc through many foods, but you can also supplement with a good quality zinc-supplement to help you reach your advised zinc-levels everyday.

Gastrointestinal Lining Support:

The primary purpose of the gastrointestinal tract is to break food down into nutrients, which can be absorbed into the body to provide energy. Firstly, food must be ingested into the mouth to be mechanically processed and moistened. Secondly, digestion occurs mainly in the stomach and small intestine where proteins, fats and carbohydrates are chemically broken down into their basic building blocks. Smaller molecules are then absorbed across the epithelium of the small intestine and subsequently enter the circulation. The large intestine plays a key role in reabsorbing excess water.

In the case of gastrointestinal disease or disorders, these functions of the gastrointestinal tract are not achieved successfully. Gastrointestinal problems are very common and most people will have experienced some of the above symptoms several times throughout their lives.

Therefore a healthy gastrointestinal lining is essential for proper digestion, immune function, and overall health.

I take a GI-Support Supplement 2 x daily.

Collagen:

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, especially type 1 collagen. It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. Collagen benefits are so striking because this protein is what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, in simplest terms, it’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together.

Collagen is often referred to as a “complex protein,” which is not surprising considering it contains 19 different amino acids. These include a mix of both nonessential (also called conditional) and essential types. Collagen is a particularly great way to get more conditional amino acids, like arginine, glutamine, glycine and proline.

Collagen is composed of three chains. Proline and glycine are the primary types of amino acids found in collagen chains. Both proline and glycine are two important amino acids that aren’t abundant in animal meats, which is where most people eating a “Western diet” get the majority of their protein from. This means that people are lacking these amino acids in their diets — since they regularly avoid eating some of the natural sources.

Nonessential amino acids are actually pretty important. Under normal circumstances they’re produced by your body. However, when you’re sick, under a lot of physical or emotional stress, or otherwise unhealthy, your body may not be able to produce enough of these amino acids on its own. The body then needs help from outside sources, mainly your diet or supplements, to get its fill.

The biggest digestive benefit of consuming more collagen is that it helps form connective tissue and therefore “seals and heals” the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Poor gut health — including changes in the gut microbiome and permeability in the gut lining — allows particles to pass into the bloodstream where they can kick off an inflammatory cascade & lead to gut-problems.

Adaptogens:

Adaptogens enclose a wide variety of different natural medicines from all corners of the globe that have a few things in common: They are safe and they have a balancing effect on something called the hypothalamic-pituitary-endocrine axis. This is the delicate balance between your brain and hormone system.

Your brain-adrenal axis, brain-thyroid and brain-gonadal axis (I know, huge words!) are needed to work in perfect harmony for a healthy mood, metabolism, energy, immune system, and sex drive. When your HP axis is imbalanced it leads to hormone problems like adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, and low to no libido at all. All the things that aren’t fun..

This is where the power of adaptogens comes in handy. While they all have a hormone-balancing quality to them, they all have their own unique strengths as well. The inhabitants of the adaptogen world work brilliantly by themselves or in synergy with other complementary adaptogens. You can mix these into your morning coffee, make a caffeine-free tonic, or blend them into your daily smoothie – whatever takes your fancy.

Adaptogens I use:

Mucuna Pruriens: This bean extract is packed with L-DOPA, which is the precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine. Great to lower stress, but also to support your ‘happy hormones’.

Ashwagandha: Since it has the ability to regulate cortisol, your body’s stress hormone, this is a powerful tool to have on hand.

Chaga: This superfood mushroom is loaded with antioxidants that help fight free radicals to keep skin youthful.

Maca: absolutely amazing for an instant energy-boost and very accessible. Fits great into a smoothie.

He Shou Wu: This herb helps to increase sex drive in those with low libidos.

Holy Basil (Tulsi): Start incorporating this into your wellness routine if you struggle with brain fog, as it works to increase cognitive function. One reason holy basil may be effective in improving stress response is the presence of three phytochemical compounds. The first two, ocimumosides A and B, have been identified as anti-stress compounds and may lower blood corticosterone (another stress hormone) and create positive alterations in the neurotransmitter system of the brain. The third is also able to lower stress-parameters.

Lion’s Mane: The nerve growth factors (NGFs) found in this mushroom can help regenerate and protect brain tissue.

Licorice Root: Licorice root can increase energy and endurance, plus help boost the immune system. It may affect blood pressure and potassium levels, so traditional licorice root is typically recommended in cycles of 12 weeks, although this isn’t the case when taking DGL licorice, which is considered safe for long-term use.

Be careful taking adaptogens, however, as they are very potent and strong, although they don’t look of much in their powder-form, they pack a punch!

Are you one of those people who has been raised on a diet of cows-milk since day dot? Yes, me too. And I absolutely love cows milk, cheese, yoghurt and so on, but if you’ve been following my health journey, you might’ve seen that a few months ago I decided to cut out dairy (& gluten), because of the research I’ve come to find and the direct negative impact it has had on my body & overall health – physically and mentally.

But, just because I don’t drink milk or have dairy anymore, doesn’t mean I don’t still want to have my cup of tea with a dash of “milk’, my ‘sometimes’ cappuccino or a delicious smoothie that’s more dense & nutritious than just making it with filtered or coconut water..

Enter; ALMOND MILK. Now, almond milk definitely is far from a new kid on the block, in fact it’s been around for years on end – however, it’s only really come into ‘fashion’ over the last five years or so, when the world seemed to shift into a ‘health-gear’ with an added focus on ‘what the heck’ we actually put into our bodies, and the direct effect it has on our health.

Have you felt this shift as well? I certainly have.

Not only are we focusing more on what we put into our bodies, but we’re also focusing on how the things we eat & drink have been produced, where it’s from and the values the food or drink company hold.

So, for myself, I’ve completely switched over to nut & plant-based milks to keep my tummy, mind and body happy. And I’m thriving on them instead of cows milk. I’ve been using Almond Breeze for years because it’s super easy to pick up when I’m at the supermarket, is always priced at an everyday low price, has four varieties to choose from, tastes great and my body agrees with it.

What are the benefits of almond milk?

Well, there’s a whole lot, but I’ll bullet-point a few for your below that has been scientifically proven:

  • Low in sugar; just make sure you choose the ‘unsweetened’ versions (Almond Breeze Unsweetened
and Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla is delicious!)
  • High in Vitamin E: Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that combats inflammation and stress in the body, and in just a cup of almond milk, you can get up to 30-50% of your daily Vitamin E intake. Vitamin E has also been found to be incredibly beneficial for brain health & optimised brain function
  • Naturally Lactose-Free: making it perfect for those who are lactose-intolerant.
  • Vegan: it’s completely vegan and suitable for vegetarians and vegans to incorporate into their diets.
  • Low in calories: if you are watching your weight or trying to loose a bit of weight, almond milk is a great option, as it’s low in calories compared to cow’s milk. One cup of almond milk normally only contains 60 calories as oppose to more than double in cow’s milk.
  • Low in carbs: which means, if you’re after a stabile blood-sugar, this is your guy. Because of its low GI, your body will use the carbs as energy so the sugars aren’t stored as fat.
  • It contains good fats; if you’re following somewhat of a keto-diet or looking to incorporate more healthy fats into your diet, then almond milk is a great choice, serving up around 3 grams of good fats per serve.

There are many more reasons and valid studies shown as to why almond milk is a great addition to anyone’s diet, especially if you’re wanting to focus more on your health and wellbeing.

Still confused as to how you can incorporate almond milk into your diet? I’ll give you some examples below:

How to incorporate almond milk:

  • Use it like you’d use regular milk
  • In your coffee or tea
  • Mix it in smoothies
  • Make it into an ice-cream
  • Use it in soups, curries, stews or sauces
  • Use it in your baking and raw treats
  • Drink it straight up (I love the Almond Breeze Chocolate Milk as a treat)

Check out my recipe section where there are quite a few recipes incorporating almond milk so you can get started :)

As always, please let me know in the comments if you create any of my recipes or have any questions at all.

Don’t be fooled by the jam-packed Campbell Pde. full of busses which are unloading tourists én mass right next to Hungry Jacks & McDonald’s.. There’s so much more to Bondi Beach than the main strip that runs through one of the world’s most famous beaches..

I’m here to let you in on all the best things to do in Bondi (read; life), so that you can escape the masses (mostly) and spend your day(s) living more like a local and experience why us residents never really leave the Bondi Bubble that we so dearly & die-hard call home.

Eat:

You know my favourite thing to do is eat & anything that’s got to do with food; count me in!

Organic Republic Bakery:

Because this is tucked away further back from the main-strip in more of a local area, you don’t get too many tourists wandering down here. It’s a very humble and simple bakery with a big personality. You can catch locals enjoying their ritual morning-coffee and breakfast here most mornings, and staff is always up for a good chat. They also serve the absolute best avo-smash on their homemade bread which I crave on a daily basis. Even better is that they have outdoor seating, so basking in the sun & reading the paper with a cuppa could be your morning-highlight.

The Depot:

Well, this one has been around for quite some time, but still, nothing really beats their lunches there. It’s only a short stroll from the north end of Bondi Beach, but I still find that it doesn’t get too touristy as it’s off the main strip in Bondi. Pop in and have lunch or breakfast that’s fresh, vibrant and uber-delicious any day of the week. I love the staff who’s always super chatty & friendly. They’re also great at catering for dietary requirements, just FYI.

Orchard St.:

This is the cutest little whimsical & magical elixir bar you’ll ever set foot in. Owned by Kirsten Shanks, a naturopath, herbalist & nutritionist, who’ve created a little sanctuary along with a full product-line of herbs, tonics, juices and more. I can’t express enough how wonderful, loving and calming this little place is. The staff are some of the most wonderful people you’ll ever meet, and if you’re into meditation, a morning or afternoon medi on their large Turkish Pillows outside in the sun (or shade) is just divine. You truly feel whole after you walk out there – raw cacao/salted caramel tonic in one hand and raw bounty-bar in the other.

Raw Bar:

The best sushi & Japanese you’ll eat in a long, long time. Raw Bar has been around since 1997 which is an achievement in itself due to the high turn-over of restaurants in the hospitality industry in Sydney, and Bondi in particular. They’re definitely doing something very right, because Raw Bar continuously draws locals down for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Weekends are especially busy, ant there’s nothing quite like a set of chopsticks, a Tommy’s Margherita & the afternoon sun on their table & chairs outside for you to enjoy.

The Shop & Wine Bar:

Just at the name states; this is a one stop shop for all your favourite #FoodGoals. A breakfast, lunch & dinner watering-hole all in-one. You’ll mostly find locals here roaming around for their coffee or wine fox – all depending on the time of the day. It serves salads, delicious (huge) sandwiches and tapas-platters. It’s a very tiny place, so most of the seating is outside which is perfect for the summer-days and in winter, you get to sit outside snuggled up in blankets with a big heater over your head. Absolute perfection, because, really, Australians have a hard time letting go of Summer no matter how cold it gets… #truth

North Bondi Fish:

Ok, this definitely get’s a bit more touristy, but you’d still find a fair bit of locals heading down, especially for a Sunday arvo session. You cannot beat the view from North Bondi Fish. It’s beautifully situated at the North end of Bondi, and it get’s an amazing amount of sun during the day, and a beautiful sunset at night. Spritzs, drinks and seafood is there absolute specialties paired with some good music and kind staff. Make sure you book ahead, and get a table on the balcony so you can bask in all of Bondi’s gloriousness.

Porch & Parlour:

If you were unlucky to be in Bondi when Porch was closed, I’m so sorry for your loss. If you’re here now, or planning to visit soon; don’t miss this one. The wonderful people of Porch are loved amongst so many of the locals, which also means it’s always busy and packed. Go a little outside of the standard breakfast and lunch hours, and you’ll be able to get a seat a bit quicker. Although Porch is mostly known for their breakfast & lunches (which are YUM!), I actually really love to come up for dinner (Wednesday to Sunday), because it has a beautiful view over Bondi, it’s a great people-watching space and their dinner is just to die for. They also serve some pretty epic wines, so really, it’s all just a match-made in heaven TBH.

Do:

Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk:

Okay, this is very touristy, but it’s really beautiful and should be one of those ‘bucket-list’ things that you want to experience if you’re ever in Sydney. From South Bondi to Bronte and back, is around 6 kilometres in total. It’ll take you around Bondi, Mackenzies Bay, Tamarama & Bronte – you can even continue to Clovelly, Gordon’s Bay and Coogee if you’re up fora . challenge.
Definitely wear walking shoes/trainers otherwise you’ll end up with blisters, and if it’ set to be a hot day, I suggest doing this in the morning around sunrise or in the arvo around sunset – both to avoid the sweltering heat (in summer) and the masses.

Insider tip: remember to walk on the left side in Australia, it really frustrates locals who run or power-walk the coastal walk when they have to basically dodge people all the time ;)

Bondi Icebergs Pool;

Don’t go on a hot & sunny day if you’re here in Summer, go on an overcast & rainy day, and do the Sauna & fit in a swim (or two) in the pool. It’s such a refreshing way to quicken up and a great health-kick for your body. If you’re here in winter, do the same thing. We love to swim and sauna in winter because it gets the blood flowing. Entrance is $7 (as of Jan 2019) and lets you use the sauna, pool and change-rooms with showers. FYI; on Thursdays the pool is closed for cleaning.

Lean Bean Fitness & PowerLiving Yoga:

If you’re anything like me, you probably still want to stay fit & healthy as well as move your body even if you’re on holidays. Get amongst the locals and sign-up for a few introductory classes at either Lean Bean Fitness or PowerLiving Yoga which both has discounted passes available for people who are holidaying or simply want to try a new studio before a long-term commitment. If you’re travelling around Australia, I suggest even looking into downloading and buying a membership with ClassPass as it’ll give you access to thousands of studios around Australia.

North Bondi Boatramp:

Get out here for a late afternoon/early nighttime swim and watch the sunset. It’s so beautiful and the water is amazing at this time of the day. You’ll find locals going for an after-work swim with friends or/and their dogs and the atmosphere is just beautiful.
Grab some Fish & Chips either from Fishmongers or Bondi’s Best and say ‘Hasta La Vista’ to another day in Paradise.

Bondi Farmer’s Market:

Every Sunday – Rain, Hail or Shine – The Bondi Farmer’s Market will be on (9am to 1pm). Here you can buy organic, fresh vegetables & fruit from various farms along with a multitude of other amazing produce & fresh flowers for your home.
You can also eat breakfast here which is normally something deliciously healthy, but there’ll also be a few naughty things in there to suit everyone #balance. It’s a beautiful atmosphere to soak up, and whenever I personally travel, I love to see what other people purchase and eat in different cultures.

Gould St:

If you’re into shopping, then Gould St. in Bondi is the place for you. Shops I absolutely adore includes Tuchuzy, Love Stories, Lucy Folk, Magali Pascal, Miss Brown’s Vintage, Watson x Watson , Bailey Nelson and probably a few more, but you get the gist of it. Round it off with a coffee at Drake Eatery and perhaps even a cheeky cheese-platter and some more people-watching.

Stay:

QT Bondi:

This is by far my favourite place to stay in Bondi. So much so, I sometimes have a staycation here. I love the genuine and kind staff here who are always super helpful and available at any time. I also love that the rooms feel more like small apartments, and genuinely make you feel like you’re in a home away from home. Most of the rooms also have beautiful balcony’s so you can either enjoy the sunrise or sunsets.

AirBnB:

There’s no way around it. Living in Bondi is expensive, and so is holidaying. If you wanna save some coin, and especially if you’re travelling a few of you together, look up AirBnB and find an apartment with everything you need. This also means you can save on dining out so much and buy produce from the Farmer’s Market to cook at home.
There are so many great AirBnB’s in Bondi, you’ll hardly have a hard time finding something, however definitely suggest booking well in advance in the summer-periods as Bondi does get very crowded.

Hope you enjoyed this little collection of nuggets in Bondi.

You can always email me or catch me on my Instagram if you want more suggestions.

Lots of love, Caroline xx

REVIEW: THE WILLIAM INGLIS BY MGALLERY SOFITEL
I’m a big fan of overnight getaways or even staycations – it saves you a lot of time, but gives you the much-needed break from everyday life like work, washing and all those other boring adulty-things we all have to do.

So, we decided to stay somewhat local – at least for Sydney – as Bondi-residents it’s far from the ‘bubble’, but exactly what we needed and only 50 mins drive away.

Heading 50 mins South-West of Sydney by car and you end up in Liverpool, NSW. However, we weren’t staying in the thick of it, actually, far from it.

We spend a night at the newly opened The William Inglis which is a boutique 5-star luxury hotel owned by Mgallery by Sofitel. It’s part of the new $140m precinct developed by thoroughbred horse sales company William Inglis & Son Ltd called Riverside Stables, AccorHotels is partnering with
this 5th generation family owned business. It’s located adjacent to the Warwick Farm racecourse.

Riverside Stables is the result of nine years of planning, with Inglis relocating their Sydney business, which has been situated at Randwick for a remarkable 100 years, to its new home at Warwick Farm. Named after the Inglis company’s figurehead and founder, William Inglis, the hotel will service the racing industry and clients, but is also be a major drawcard for regional tourism across both the corporate and leisure
sectors.

The Hotel:

The William Inglis Hotel will be the cornerstone of the new site and is drawing travellers from around the world. Celebrating Inglis’ racing and thoroughbred history, each of the 144 guest rooms has a unique theme and is named after one of the many champion racehorses sold through the sales rings. The biggest, on Level 8, is the Presidential Suite – named the Black Caviar Suite. Each guest room will be personalised to the champion racehorse it is named after, featuring an artistic painting of the winning
jockey silks, and an image or original artwork of the horse. In addition to this, the entrance to each room includes a replica of the original winner’s plaque from the Newmarket barns.

The rooms are beautifully designed, and has a large bathroom that’s perfect to relax in, complete with a bath for those (still cold) Spring nights.

The beds are large and comfy – not too soft, not too hard, but just perfect. And you have a blissful night’s sleep, waking up to a beautiful sunlight coming through the curtains, and revealing the race-track below you.

The Facilities:

The William Inglis Hotel offers guests a choice of world-class hospitality facilities including all day dining paddock-to-plate restaurant Newmarket Room. The menu focuses on robust food with rural soul but refined elegance. The restaurant was built in honour of Inglis’ Randwick home and one of its more famous elements, the Newmarket Room, where many a client spent time celebrating with friends.
Elements of the Newmarket site and the Inglis heritage are incorporated throughout, with an entire wall of the restaurant lined with the original Group 1-winner plaques that were featured on barn doors throughout the Newmarket complex. Along with this, the restaurant is decorated with photos of the original Newmarket site. Adjoining the restaurant is the beautiful al fresco dining area, Newmarket Gardens.

A stunning rooftop bar and pool deck takes pride of place atop the hotel. The Chiltern Pool Deck & Bar is the only pool in the world where you can relax on cabanas and sun loungers while overlooking 300 acres of greenery and watch the races from above. The bar serves cocktails and pool snacks for those sunny days.

The whisky lounge positioned on the mezzanine level of the hotel is named in honour of the year William Inglis and Son was founded. 1867 Lounge is a high-end whisky and wine bar, offering a sophisticated cocktail menu, whisky selection, specialised champagne list and bar snacks.

Heroic Café in the ground floor lobby provides gourmet coffee and an all-day café menu which is fast, fresh and wholesome, easy for you to grab if you’re on the go, or when you’re heading back home for the car-ride.

The Leisure Facilities:

A fully-equipped 24-hour gymnasium and luxurious day spa is located on level eight of the hotel.
The fitness centre has the latest gym equipment including a range of cardio and strength facilities, and the spa offers a variety of indulgent massages and beauty treatments.

The heated outdoor 20m pool is perfect to relax by or to go for a swim.

We absolutely loved our stay at The William Inglis, and we walked away feeling refreshed and renewed. We didn’t need to leave the hotel as we only stayed one night, allowing us to take full advantage of discovering the beauty in and around the hotel and just clock-off from every day life.

I highly recommend a visit, if you’re after a romantic get-away with your partner, but don’t want to spend a lot of money on travel or hotel.

THE TOP 5 REASONS YOU SHOULD PUT COPENHAGEN ON YOUR TRAVEL BUCKET LIST /copenhagen-travel-bucket-list/ /copenhagen-travel-bucket-list/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 05:08:50 +0000 /?p=2550 Oh, Copenhagen. The post THE TOP 5 REASONS YOU SHOULD PUT COPENHAGEN ON YOUR TRAVEL BUCKET LIST appeared first on Caroline Høgh Groth.

]]>
Oh, Copenhagen. The little capital of Denmark has just below 800.000 residents in the core of the city, however it’s far from small when it comes to personality.

When you hear the word Copenhagen you may instantly think ‘The Little Mermaid” or “Crown Princess Mary”, but I’m here to tell you, and take it from some one who’s from Denmark themselves, there’s so much more to Copenhagen than what first meets the eye.

Here are my Top 5 Reasons You Should Put Copenhagen On Your Bucket List:

1. The Danes Are The Happiest People In The World:

Year on year, Denmark has earned a top-spot on the list according to the UN World Happiness Report and having grown up in Denmark, I can nod yes to this fact.

Then, why are we so happy and how do you get a piece of the pie?

Yes, Danes have a stable government, low levels of public corruption, and access to high-quality education and health care. The country does have the the highest taxes in the world, but the vast majority of Danes happily pay: They believe higher taxes can create a better society.

Perhaps most importantly, however, they value a cultural construct called “hygge”.

The word HYGGE, refers to high-quality social interactions. Hygge is sometimes translated as “cozy,” but a better definition of hygge is “intentional intimacy,” which can happen when you have safe, balanced and harmonious shared experiences. A cup of coffee with a friend in front of a fireplace might qualify, as could a summer picnic in the park.

Research on hygge has found that in Denmark, it’s integral to people’s sense of well-being. It acts as a buffer against stress, while also creating a space to build camaraderie.

So, it’s time to get your HYGGE on & snatch up some of that happiness!

2. Experience A Whole City Just By Riding Your Bike:

It’s true – we’ve spent hundreds of years to create a city that is completely functional just by riding your bicycle. Bicycle paths are almost as wide as a normal car-lane, because there are actually more bicycles in Denmark than there is people – crazy, right?

Copenhagen is flat as a pancake, which makes sightseeing ideal on a bike and in return, you get your adrenalin rushing & your blood pumping and it all helps to promote those happy-hormones in your brain, too. Cultural + Happiness + Exercise = Win, Win, Win.

(Tip: Rent a Donkey Rep Bike which is through an app on your phone and located on most streets throughout Copenhagen)

3. Copenhagen Is EXTRA-Green:

This is for all of you who is extra focused on the environment, but still want to travel; Copenhagen has electric buses, recycling-crazy citizens, clean harbours and shops selling clothes made from organic bamboo, add to this; a full 64% of the city’s hotel rooms are certified as eco-friendly and three-quarters of the food served in public institutions is organic. Impressive, right?
However, this is only the beginning: By 2025, Copenhagen plans to be the world’s first carbon-neutral capital.
Denmark continues to be a front-leader in terms of sustainability, environment-protection and continuous development – if you want to gain inspiration on how to live a better and a GREENER life, Copenhagen will tick all your points and send you home with a bucket-load of inspiration.

4. Indulge In Some Of The Best Food In The World:

Yes, I know, big words, but I feel it’s true, and we do have a few Michelin-Stars to prove it.. However, if you’re a bit younger like me (read; not as cashed up), then dive into the colourful streets of Copenhagen Streetfood and walk away feeling satisfied, enriched (in experiences) & ready for more the next day.
Copenhagen is home to so many different types of food & cultures, there’ll be something for everyone. However, if you’re really keen to get your true Dane on, then head into Nyhavn and buy a beer (Carlsberg or Tuborg) and order an open rye-bread sandwich with toppings and you’ll almost hear the angels sing once you’re done.
This all may sound like you’ll be leaving with a bit extra on the love-handles, but Danish food is actually quite healthy and in particular, not heavy at all.
If you’re keen on combining a few things, like: Danish Design + Danish Interior + Danish Food, then make sure you rent an Air BnB so you can head to the Supermarket (there’s one on each corner – seriously!) and whip up a Danish dish yourself, and enjoy it whilst sitting back in your beautiful & light Danish Apartment.
(Tip; you’ll save a heap of money, too, as hotels in Copenhagen are rather pricey)

5. SHOP TIL YOU DROP:

Well, this probably doesn’t need that much more explanation, but Copenhagen has some of the best shopping in the world. From International luxury brands, to Scandinavian simplicity to locally made brands, there’s something for everyone. Head to Strøget, located in the middle of Copenhagen, which is one of the world’s longest pedestrian-only shopping avenues, and a major draw for tourists. Remember to head down some of the side-streets and alley-ways as that’s where you’ll really discover gold.
(Tip: if you do not line in Scandinavia or EU then you can get your tax back (which you pay on purchases) when you head to the airport and get quite a lot back!)
.. Now, when are you booking your next trip to Copenhagen?

THE JULY BEAUTY EDIT – TRIED & TESTED /july-beauty-edit-tried-tested/ /july-beauty-edit-tried-tested/#respond Tue, 31 Jul 2018 01:37:35 +0000 /?p=2553 I know we should never be excited about time going quickly, but I have to admit, I’m pretty excited we’re almost through Winter in...

The post THE JULY BEAUTY EDIT – TRIED & TESTED appeared first on Caroline Høgh Groth.

]]>
I know we should never be excited about time going quickly, but I have to admit, I’m pretty excited we’re almost through Winter in Australia and that Spring & Summer is fast approaching..

That said, I did just get 3 weeks in Denmark where we had a glorious 25-30 degrees every day. Which also seemed to throw my skin a bit out of whack resulting in small breakouts, and just dull skin in general.

I’ve tested a whole heap of beauty products again this July and below I’ve picked out my favourite one’s which really had an impact and withstood the different climates from Denmark to Australia.

Oily Skin Balancer by The Jojoba Company:

You’d think my skin would go dry in Winter, but it’s the opposite for me. And especially with the hot to cold temperatures, my skin is all over the place.

This Oily Skin Balancer from The Jojoba Company is great at balancing my oily T-zone and breakouts but still completely moisturising my cheeks and the rest of my face so it doesn’t dry out.

It glides on easily after you’ve washed your face, and I found that it helped soothe my small pimples and helped them stay hydrated which resulted in no scarring when they retracted and disappeared.

I sometimes added in a bit of Retinol Serum to amp up the cell-turnover further, but it’s great on its own as well.

Cold Plunge Pore Mash by Ole Henriksen:

This is the newest brainchild from Ole Henriksen himself. It’s no secret that I’ve loved and adored Ole since my teenage-years as he was the first person who introduced me to skincare and helping me target my acne – fast forward, 16 years later and he’s no less wise.

This detoxifying, cooling clay mask instantly reduces the look of pores, smoothens skin texture and controls oil all day. It’s bright blue which is fun and different, but this doesn’t mean it works less efficiently.

Volume Spray by OUAI HAIRCARE:

I have incredibly thin & fine hair, and not much of it either.. So you can imagine for my hair to even gain the slightest bit of volume, some good products are in order to help me with that OOMPH..

Enter, the OUAI Volume Spray.. I’ve actually used this spray for a little over 7 months after every shower, and I cant live without it.

It’s non-sticky, non-drying and it sprays on easily at the roots. You don’t need much and a little goes a long way. Turn your head upside down when you blow-dry your hair, and discover a new dimension of VOLUME!

Detox Dry Shampoo by DRYBAR:

I’m a huge lover and also in serious need (everyday!) of dry shampoo.. I genuinely think it’s one of the best inventions since sliced bread! Don’t you agree?

However, I’ve come across a lot of dry shampoo’s that 1) makes your hair more greasy or 2) dries your hair out. And then, what’s the point in spending your hard-earned money on it, if you’re just going to be walking around with average, oily or dry hair? My point exactly!

Enter, this little Detox Dry Shampoo from drybar. It’s super light, has a lovely fresh scent and you don’t need much of it, but even if you accidentally overuse it, it doesn’t make your hair gritty and ‘powdered’ like many others do.

I’m a fan, and I keep repurchasing this one along with their Dry Conditioner.

Lip Scrub by Frank Body:

We all want luscious and pouty lips, but how many of us actually take care of them? It’s an area we tend to overlook, but it’s actually one of the first signs of ageing that will show – particularly the skin around the mouth.

I love this little (and easy!) compact coffee lip scrub from Frank Body which has their signature coffee-scent. It leaves the lips soft and blushy (from the blood-flow after scrubbing), but isn’t hard on your skin at all.

The lip scrub is a mix of robusta coffee and coffee seed oil, raw sugar, cold-pressed macadamia oil and ethically sourced beeswax & it’s rich in fatty acids and antioxidants.

Probiotic+ DS Soothing Serum by AMPERNA:

This little helper has really soothed my skin when I had an allergic reaction to a skin-product I used (painful!).

Probiotics is the (newest) craze in almost everything at the moment. From what we eat, to what we put in our bodies and on our skin, probiotics is making a serious comeback because it’s so healing and gentle that most people can benefit from this.

This deeply restorative formula from AMPERNA cools and helps soothe irritated skin and calm redness. The copper and zinc gluconates help to limit the spread of harmful bacteria and replenish the skin barrier.

If you especially suffer from rosacea, acne, dermatitis or any other skin-issues, I’d highly recommend trying this range from AMPERNA to see if it can help you.

Hyaluronic Acid Firming Eye Serum by SWISSE:

This eye serum from Swisse just glides on so easily and instantly moisturises the under-eye area along with it’s soothing properties in the form of it’s gel-like consistency.

It’s designed to boost the skin’s moisture retention capabilities by combining hyaluronic acid, peptides and red algae extract to diminish the appearance of dark circles, and visibly improve skin texture.

I use it both morning and night, and I’ve noticed a big difference in my dark circles under my eyes which has lightened, and also the tightness in the skin.

Hope you found my picks of the month interesting and there was something which took your fancy.

See you next month for my August Beauty Edit.

The post 11 Ways I Practice Self Care (For Myself). appeared first on Caroline Høgh Groth.

]]>
Chances are, if you’re rushing to get to this article, you’re probably just as bad at taking time out of your calendar to focus on yourself and your own needs as much as I am guilty of it.

Prioritising everyone else in our lives always seem like the right thing to do, but in reality, you’re actually forgetting about yourself and that doesn’t help either parts. For you to truly take care of others, you first need to take care of yourself, and I’m here to give you a few little ideas to amp up the self-care regime significantly.

Are you comfortable? First step. Let’s go..

1. Listen to a podcast or audiobook:

One of my favourite things to do is listening to podcasts about a particular subject I’m passionate about. E.g. I love to listen to anything that delves further into gut-health, diet and how we can heal our bodies through natural remedies, herbs and supplements.

Audiobook are also a great way to relax and rewind, instead of reading a book. Already have a favourite book you love? Try downloading it on Audible or iTunes, plop in your headphones, and chillax.
My favourite audiobooks are spiritual editions or ‘self-help’ books that see’s me learning as I go. If you have a hard time relaxing, this may be for you, as you still feel like you ‘take something away’ from your self-care session.

2. Tune into your meditation & mindfulness practice:

I know, this one is a hard one. Even myself, who’s a vedic meditator, find it hard to find the ‘want’ to sometimes do my meditations. My morning meditations I will always do, however I’m at times lacking at finding time to do it in the afternoons. Often, I also won’t do it, because part of me resist it. That’s my ego chatting (hello, there!) and telling me lies.

I know, that when I tune into my meditation and mindfulness practice I’m a better version of myself – for others, but mainly for my inner world. It’s much calmer, and less anxious.

As much as we should never ‘force’ ourselves to do anything, sometimes I feel I need to force myself to do my afternoon-meditations because I know I’ll feel better after it, and I know it’s not my true Self that is wanting to escape it.

Meditation lowers your heart-rate, your breathing becomes of much better quality and your anxious and stressed mind settles into the peace that is always available to us if we want it.

3. Get cooking good looking:

Yes, I did in fact say cooking!

To me, cooking is another form of meditation. Using my hands and mind to create something that will nourish and do me good in the end, is a lot of fun and also very exciting.

It teaches you a lot, in particular patience & trial and error – assets that are incredibly useful in life. Just think of the ingredients as little people, you know what I mean?

And maybe you want to be better at cooking? Well, give yourself that time to learn and delve into that world. It’s all about YOU, remember?

4. Sip on a cup of tea & binge-watch your favourite tv-show:

If you follow me, you’d know I quit drinking coffee a few months ago now. Instead, I swapped it with tea and now I can’t live without it. I’m especially loving Earl Grey in the morning as it’s got natural caffeine in it from the black tea, but recently I’ve upped my intake of Fennel Tea & Liquorice Tea – both really good for digestion, settling tummies but also as relaxant teas. Add a splash of milk & honey, and jump on the couch (or in bed!) to binge-watch your favourite tv-show on Netflix.

Who cares whether you love watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Game of Thrones or Bold & The Beautiful? Don’t judge yourself, we all have a closet-secret when it comes to tv-shows. Just delve into it, and forget about everything else but yourself and your tea. Capiche?

5. Stop saying ‘I SHOULD’:

Are you already nodding your head, because you know what I’m talking about?

How many times, if you counted, in a day, do you think you said to yourself ‘I should…’? Most will answer; far too many!

If you’ve read ‘How To Get Sh*t Done’ you will know what I’m talking about.. For those of you who hasn’t, this is what I mean:

Should is a word that implies obligation and expectation and often comes as a box set that’s gift-wrapped in guilt and even shame. It’s also a word that implies an open-endedness and the absence of a decision. It describes possibility rather than reality. “I should go to the gym” is not the same as “I’m going to the gym.” “I’m going to the gym” is definitive. You’ve got a plan and you’re executing that plan. There’s no feeling involved, it’s simply a commitment. The person saying “I should go to the gym” might end up by lacing up her runners, or she might spend another hour on the couch. Not only does should suggest things are still up in the air, it’s almost always a negative.

And whose expectations are we meeting—or worse, failing—when we badger ourselves with should?
This can be a tricky tangle to unpick. But it’s worth slowing down and examining if you’re being pulled toward doing something because you believe it’s the right thing to do or because you’re conforming to a societal expectation that doesn’t serve you.

So, quit should’ing and start doing what you want to do – without guilt or shame!

6. Get out amongst nature & get your Biophilia on:

Bio what? Biophilia means having the urge to affiliate with other forms of life & connect with nature – something most of us could benefit hugely from.

You’ve probably also heard the term ‘Earthing’ from all those Hipsters & Hippies around you, but you know what? They (me included) are really onto something. Connecting with nature, and getting out into the open whether it’ll be 40 degrees or -10 degrees, it will all help you reconnect with yourself, the Universe and Mother Earth.

Even better if you can get your shoes off and sink you feet into the grass, sand or water to further promote the connecting between skin and nature. It’s very healing & relaxing when we allow ourselves to live and breathe at the same vibrations as nature & the Earth do.

7. Get your Sweat On:

We all know it; exercising and moving our bodies works wonders for our minds and gives us that ‘feel good-feeling’.

Whether it’ll be HIIT, Pilates, Yoga, Running, Tennis, Dancing or even Rockclimbing – whatever tickles your fancy when it comes to exercise that gives you that sense of ‘I’ve treated myself nicely’ get out and do it for your selfcare session.

When we exercise, we allow our bodies to produce more serotonin and endorphins completely naturally – both helps us to feel happier, less stressed, less anxious and much more energetic for the entire day, especially if we exercise in the morning.

8. Take over the bathroom & pamper yourself silly:

You have full permission to start this right.as.we.speak.. Get going.

Not only is it uber rancho relaxo to setup your own little beauty and pampering-spa, it’s also good for your biggest organ – your skin.

Use facial masques that contain clay, aloe vera, honey, cucumber or hyaluronic acid to help you really slip into relaxation and then either fill the bathtub with some epsom salt & lavender and chill out or head back into the couch and pop some cucumber slices over your eyes.

Chiiiiill baby G.

9. Laugh until your tummy hurts:

Whether it’s a comedy-show, a funny YouTube clip or laughing with your friends or boyfriend/girlfriend, it all counts.

Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies and improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals which will help promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Need more info? Get laughing. The belly-laughs kinda-ones are even better.

10. Write in your journal:

If you’re new to this, you may find it slightly strange and weird to start with. Like, what should I say or write? I know everything, it’s in my head, I don’t need to waste my time writing it down with a pen..

However, that is the point exactly. Every single day we are bombarded with exterior impressions, questions and demands along with our own inner-judge we all have that it can, at times, all become far too much – we don’t want to get to that point.

Starting to journal down your thought, emotions and ideas every single day can really help you to off-load some of the worries you may have. It can also help you to bring that idea to life that you’ve been thinking about for years.

Either way; you give yourself permission to feel and express whatever is going on, on the inside, even though you’re just expressing it to yourself.

Our brains often understand somethings much better once they’re noted down, and have been said out loud in the real world.

Give it a try – whats the worst that can happen?

11. Stay in your PJ’s all day long:

Yep, this one is simple, but incredibly hard for a lot of us to do..

Sometimes, our bodies need to just RELAX and rewind. Sometimes we need sleep, we need rest and we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us.

We live in a world where our society swears by a go-go-go attitude and that’s great at times, but sometimes that ends up with fatigue, stress and depression.

Giving yourself full permission to stay in bed, drink tea, moose around in your PJ’s, eat ice-cream for breakfast and breakfast for dinner is okay!
